Day three: we first drove to Athabasca Falls, see pictures below. These glacial falls were very impressive. The water has an icy blue color to it because as the glacier melts, the water carries sediment with it that has the blue tones. The canyon that the water carved through is equally as impressive. I also have video in You Tube- look at me. Search for puestads.
We then drove on to Sunwapta Falls. More beautiful falls. There should be a video in You Tube along with the pictures below.
From their drove up to Columbia Icefield area. The icefield rests at the base of huge glacier. This is a huge tourist attraction. They have tour buses that drive right on to the icefield and allows people to walk on it. Since we didn’t do the bus tour, we hiked to the base of the icefield. It was a very steep hike. We were not allowed to walk on its surface. It is rapidly receding. There were signs depicting where the ice was in 1905, 1920, and 1982. They claim that it will be fully melted in about 100 years. Again - the pictures do not do it justice.
Day four: we drove up to the Jasper Sky Tram. We took the 7 ½ minute ride to the top of Whistlers Peak. You think you get to the top but there is another mile to the top. Steve hiked up the top of the nearby mountain where the most sweeping mountain scene he has ever experienced. He had a full 360 degree view from the mountain top. Absolutely crazy.
We had lunch back at camp and took a short rest. We drove to Pyramid Lake for a short visit. We will spend rest of today getting ready to leave tomorrow for our five days in Banff. The weather in Jasper has been a little cool the highs have been in the high 50’s and low 60’s. It should warm up over the next few days. Gloria would love to bask in the sun.
